China’s tougher measures to curb the spread of Covid-19 have sparked public outrage, especially after it prevented people from leaving the country.
The National Immigration Administration on Thursday said it would limit unnecessary outbound travel for Chinese nationals and tighten approval of entry and exit documents to prevent the virus from being brought into the country.
Although the directive has been issued before, the repetition has the potential to signal more enforcement and has added to the heightened frustration over the economic and social impact of Covid’s zero policy.
China continues to struggle to contain the worst epidemic where the closure in Shanghai has entered its sixth week and Beijing has the potential to implement similar action.
Users on Weibo, as well as other social media platforms have spread posts claiming that authorities have suspended the issuance of passports to prevent the entry of foreigners.
However, the allegation was denied by the immigration administration which said it was untrue and reiterated that the public should minimize unnecessary cross -border activity at this time.
