Data released by the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) showed the country's grocery and wholesale trade rose 3.9% year-on-year (y-o-y) during the first quarter of 2022 (1Q22) followed by the motor vehicle sub-sector.
According to the Head of National Statistics, Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin, retail trade increased 51.1% while wholesale trade jumped 1.2% and was followed by the motor vehicle sub -sector at 8.8%.
Clearly, the quarter-on-quarter (q-o-q) comparison saw its volume index increase 0.7% supported by retail trade growth of 3.2%.
Summary of data
1. Motor vehicle volume:
Sales of motor vehicle spare parts and accessories rose 18.5%.
Vehicle maintenance and repair added 16.5%.
Motor vehicle sales increased 9.1%.
Motorcycle maintenance and repairs declined 14.1%.
The y-o-y motor vehicle volume index fell 0.9% from the previous quarter.
2. Retail trade volume:
Non -store retail sales rose 26.3%.
Retail sales of non -specialized stores added 11.1%.
Retail sales of automotive fuel in specialty stores jumped 11%.
Sales of food, beverages and tobacco grew 6.6%.
The y-o-y retail trade volume index reached 3.2% over the previous quarter.
3. Wholesale trade volume:
Agricultural raw materials and live animals at 8.4%.
Sources of food, beverages and tobacco at 4.6%.
Household goods at 3.3%.
Machinery, equipment and supplies at 2.7%.
The y-o-y retail trade volume index decreased 1.5%.
If adjusted according to the season, then the wholesale/retail trade volume index increased by 5.1% compared to the last quarter of 2021.
Uzir added that all sub -sectors recorded positive growth with retail trade at 5.9%, motor vehicles at 5%and wholesale trade at 2.8%.
