 ‘It’s been a long 8 -year period.’

After 8 years of shutting down Alphabet Inc’s Google News news service in Spain, it is finally back after the repeal of copyright laws introduced by the European Union (EU).

It is understood that previously the Madrid government had forced companies or news aggregators to pay publishers for using their news under rules introduced by the EU before being repealed recently.

The repeal indirectly allows media channels to negotiate with tech giants to display their news in Spain.

That string, Google News plans to return to the Spanish market as early as next year.

This has been confirmed by the Chairman of Google Country Spain, Fuencisla Clemares, stating that starting next year Spanish citizens will receive access to the interesting news and stories on offer.

He added that Google will ensure cooperation with publishers to reach an agreement in covering their rights under the new law.

Meanwhile, Clemares also welcomed the return of Google News by expressing his desire to launch the Google News Showcase, a mobile vehicle for paid news publishers, throughout Spain in conjunction with the 20th anniversary of the service.
