Data released by the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) for the consumer price index (CPI) in May was seen to increase 2.8% year -on -year at 126.6 points compared to the same month last year at 123.1 points.
It also indirectly surpassed the Malaysian average inflation for the period January 2011 to May 2022 at 1.9%.
Terang Chief of Statistics Datuk Seri Mohd Uzir Mahidin food inflation continued to lead the increase by reaching a new level of 5.2%, the highest since November 2011, with 93% of goods registering an increase.
Detailed that 29.4% of goods recorded an increase of below 5%, 37.7% of goods increased between 5-10% while another 32.9% of canak goods exceeded 10%.
The following is a summary of Malaysia's CPI data readings for May 2022.
The transportation sector rose 3.9%.
The restaurant and hotel sector jumped 3.7%.
The housing care, furniture and housing appliances sector grew by 2.9%.
The other goods and services sector reached 1.95%.
The recreation and culture sector increased 1.8%.
The housing, water, electricity, gas and fuel sectors increased 1.2%.
The education sector is sprouting 1%.
Turning to the details of the food sector, it is the largest contributor to food inflation where:
Food from home rose 5.5% from 4.1%.
Food outside the home increased 5.1% compared to 4.4%.
The meat sub-group recorded the highest increase at 9.55 compared to 6.2%.
Vegetable products reached 8.1%.
Dairy products, cheese and hard -boiled eggs 8%.
Fish and seafood products increased 4.3%.
Sprout oil products 3.7%.
According to Datuk Mohd Uzir, the increase in the meat sub-group, especially chicken, was due to the increase in costs and high demand, with an increase of 13.4% compared to 7.5%.
Meanwhile, the increase in vegetable prices was due to a spike in the cost of fertilizer, transportation, labor and weather conditions.
Meanwhile, the inflation rate at the state level, Selangor and the Federal Territory recorded the highest record at 3.7% followed by Kedah, Perlis, Sabah and the Federation of Labuan at 2.2%.
Next, Melaka and 3 other states recorded the lowest record at 2.1%.
