The escalating financial crisis in Sri Lanka has prompted President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to seek help from Russian President Vladimir Putin.
On Wednesday, the island nation's leader said he had spoken to Putin to get credit assistance for fuel imports.
In a tweet on her Twitter account, Gotabaya Rajaksa said that the two leaders have had very productive communication.
While thanking Putin for the support given earlier, he has asked for an offer of credit support to import fuel in the face of current economic challenges.
It is common knowledge that many Western countries have restricted Russian energy imports in response to the Ukrainian invasion.
In fact, the Prime Minister of Seri Lanka, Ranil Wickremesinghe had earlier also stated that the country would follow suit and seek other sources first, but to no avail.
Sri Lanka has been buying oil from Russia in recent months to help boost fuel supplies during the crisis and the government has signaled to import more from the country.
