Chinese Deputy Prime Minister Liu He had a virtual face -to -face with United States (US) Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen to discuss macroeconomic policy coordination.
Chinese Commerce Ministry sources reported the dialogue was fruitful, in a ‘pragmatic and transparent’ session while the US described the talks as ‘transparent and substantive’.
Issues Raised by China
During the dialogue session, Liu had outlined concerns about the additional tariffs imposed by the US on Chinese goods which were deemed unfair treatment to companies from the Great Wall country.
It is understood that inflation is currently a US priority, but President Joe Biden is still in the process of making a decision on tariff easing on China.
In response, Yellen noted there were differences in tariff easing under the Biden administration while slamming some of the tariffs inherited from former President Donald Trump’s administration against China.
Issues Highlighted by the US
On the other hand, Yellen has raised concerns about the impact of the Russia-Ukraine war on the global economy as well as China's unfair economic practices.
Nonetheless, both sides are understood to continue to maintain dialogue and extend communication with each other.
