Russia's communications regulator, Roskomnadzor, found several apps including WhatsApp, Snapchat and several apps from other foreign firms were storing user data outside of Moscow.
Following that, Roskomnadzor filed a lawsuit against the companies in Moscow's Tagansky District Court.
It is understood that Meta Platform Inc's WhatsApp application was sued for 18 million rubles ($301,255), an increase from a previous 4 million ruble ($64,000) suit last August for the same offence.
It is also the new highest value of a lawsuit filed by Roskomnadzor after Alphabet Inc Google at 15 million rubles last month.
In addition, Match Group's Tinder application was fined 2 million rubles, Snap Inc's Snapchat and Expedia Group Inc's Hotels.com were each fined 1 million rubles while Spotify was fined 500,00 rubles.
Each received the same charge of storing Russian user data on servers outside Moscow.
In response, Expedia Group stated that they would investigate the allegations and confirmed that Hotel.com had terminated its operations in Russia on April 1.
Other companies are seen to have yet to issue any statement against the suit.
It's worth noting that tech companies are now under the close scrutiny of Vladimir Putin's government, especially after Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
Facebook and Instagram, including Twitter, have previously been blocked in Russia following a string of anti-Russian accusations after the invasion.
