'What do you want to do when things have been recorded, things have gone viral.'

An investigation by the United Kingdom (UK) watchdog found that the short video application TikTok violated the child privacy protection act and faced a lawsuit of $28.91 million.

It is understood that TikTok has obtained the data of children under the age of 13 without obtaining the consent of their guardians, in addition to failing to present the matter transparently.

This is in direct breach of UK data protection law requirements.

And the investigation also found that TikTok had violated the data protection act between May 2018 and July 2020, and faced a lawsuit of $28.91 million.

Following that, the Office of the Competent Authority (ICO) UK has issued a notice of intent* to TikTok and TikTok Information Technologies UK Ltd.

*The form used for notification to comply with the general permit (such as a warning letter).

Comment ICO Officer John Edwards, digital services companies have a legal obligation to protect user data but TikTok appears to have failed to comply.

In response, TikTok representatives voiced dissatisfaction stating that they did not collect the data and would present official evidence to the ICO in the future.

Looking at the record, this is not the first time that TikTok has faced charges like this where in early July they went through the same thing with the Commerce Committee of the United States (US) Senate.
