The United States has again raised uncertainty on the Taiwan issue after President Joe Biden said his military would defend the island if China attacked.
President Biden confidently uttered the word "Yes" when asked if the US military would defend Taiwan in an interview.
"Yes, if there is actually an attack that has never happened before," said Joe Biden.
Biden's statement has provoked various reactions that are seen as contradicting the official American policy towards the islands.
In fact, he also repeated in the interview that the United States maintains the 'One China' policy and does not support Taiwan's independence in the interview.
Even so, it will maintain close ties and supply arms to Taiwan under the Taiwan Relations Act in preparation for its self-defense.
Following the interview, a White House spokesman said that US policy on Taiwan had not changed. The US has long offered an unclear position on whether it will intervene militarily in Taiwan.
This is not the first time Biden has issued such a statement, where in May before Biden also said yes to the same question.
