A viral video that says Malaysia is bankrupt and needs funds from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is fake news and baseless.

It was confirmed by the Minister of Finance, Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz himself in a post on Instagram to criticize the spread of fake news.

He commented that the viral video gave false and unfounded information, besides insisting that the government did not appoint any party body to manage the country's finances.

He added that the IMF itself identified that Malaysia's debt level was still at a good level and he cynically joked that it was impossible for the financial body to be paid to say such a thing.

Tengku Datuk Zafrul was also seen presenting the facts that saw the national debt still below the statutory debt ceiling level of 65% and continued to insist that Malaysia's economy is strong based on the good performance of the 3rd quarter.

At the same time, the Minister of Finance of Malaysia also had time to present the rate of individual bankruptcy which is seen to be still decreasing since 2016 in addition to touching on the national unemployment rate.
