The Nord Stream gas pipeline leak appears to have sparked new tensions between Russia and the European Union (EU) which are said to have elements of sabotage.
Although, it is still not clear who is responsible behind this act, but Ukraine accuses Russia of being the mastermind of the leak.
Ukraine's presidential adviser Mykhaylo Podolyak said the damage to Nord Stream 1 and 2 was an act of aggression against the EU, saying Russia deliberately wanted to cause panic before winter.
It is understood that the incident occurred on Monday, where a gas leak from Nord Stream 2 was detected while two separate leaks in Nord Stream 1 were discovered on Tuesday. Seismologists reported underwater explosions before the leak appeared.
The spill occurred in international waters, but within the economic zones of Denmark and Sweden. Both pipelines were not operating at the time of the incident, but it will affect the prospect of Europe receiving gas before winter.
Ursula von der Leyen, head of the European Commission, said the incident was caused by sabotage and warned of the strongest possible response if Europe's energy infrastructure was attacked.
Meanwhile, Russia also did not rule out the possibility that it was caused by sabotage and that the incident affected energy security in the continent.
The news added to market concerns over rising tensions between the EU and Russia and put downward pressure on the euro to fall to a 20-year low.
