Five North Korean drones crossed the border into South Korea on Monday for the first time in five years in a move that will further escalate tensions between the two countries.
Citing a CNN report, one drone reportedly traveled as far north as Seoul, about an hour's drive from the border, while four others flew around Ganghwa Island.
As a result, the South Korean military responded by firing at the drone, but it is not certain whether it was shot down.
South Korean defense official Lee Seung Oh described the action as a clear provocation and this is an airspace invasion by North Korea.
The last time a North Korean drone entered South Korean airspace was five years ago, according to the country's military.
In 2017, South Korea claimed the discovery of a North Korean drone that crashed while spying on a US-made missile system it was using.
Earlier, on Friday, South Korea said North Korea had launched two short-range ballistic missiles.
