Banks reduce cash services in most branches

Only one bank robbery in 2021

The 'cashless' lifestyle has unexpectedly benefited Denmark which saw the number of bank robberies in the country drop to zero in 2022.

Finans Danmark reports that the number of robberies has decreased in recent years as the shift towards online transactions has caused most banks to reduce cash services.

Overall, only about 20 bank branches across the country have cash holdings, according to Finans Danmark.

Interestingly, in 2021 Denmark recorded only one bank robbery, down from 222 cases in 2000.

Meanwhile, data from the central bank revealed that increased use of cards and payment apps on smartphones has pushed cash withdrawals down by about three-quarters over the past six years.

When cash disappears from banks, robbers start targeting ATMs.

However, such attacks are also reduced to zero following better technical surveillance and protection.
