New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern made a surprise announcement to step down from her post next month.

Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, Ardern said her term would end on February 7.

He explained that he no longer had the energy or inspiration to run again in the October elections.

Ardern, 42, became the world's youngest female leader when she led her Labor Party and was appointed Prime Minister aged 37 in 2017.

During his 5 years of leadership, he has faced many things including the Covid-19 pandemic, the 2019 Christchurch terrorist attack and the deadly volcanic eruption on White Island.

Jacinda Ardern also highlighted achievements made during her tenure, including legislation on climate change and child poverty.
