Tokyo is the largest city in the world by population
¥1 million is paid for each child in each family
Incentive increased from ¥300k previously
In an effort to reduce Tokyo's population, the Japanese monarchy is offering one million yen per child to families leaving the city.
Tokyo, is the largest city in the world by population with an estimated population of 38 million people.
The country has previously implemented a similar scheme, which provides 300,000 yen per child and 3 million yen as a one-off support fee for those who emigrate.
However, the move failed, as only 2,400 people voted to leave in 2021, i.e. only 0.006% of Tokyo's population.
Under the same scheme, an amount of up to five million will be offered to couples with two children under the age of 18 to move and start a business in the new residential area.
Japan is currently experiencing a major change in its demographics where the birth rate is decreasing and the rate of population aged 65 years and over is increasing.
If fewer people were born and younger populations moved to Tokyo and other metropolitan cities such as Osaka, it would leave the suburbs in chaos.
As a result, small businesses and shops outside the city will experience difficulties in finding customers and workers.
Thus, the kingdom is currently trying to stimulate the country's economy by creating flow from the city to the outside of the city, increasing the income of the outer city area and carrying out regional restoration.
