Billionaire Elon Musk and several other technology leaders are calling for a pause in the development of artificial intelligence (AI) systems.
So far, more than 1000 people including Musk and Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak have signed an open letter demanding the termination.
It is in response to the launch of GPT-4 (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) by OpenAI which is the latest version of the more advanced language modeling software.
It is understood that it is much more powerful than the previous version, which was used to power the AI chatbot, ChatGPT.
Previously, ChatGPT has gained world attention and sparked a race among technology giants, especially between Microsoft and Google to produce similar applications.
However, there are concerns expressed by those who signed the letter titled "Pause Giant AI Experiments".
According to the letter, AI systems with human competitive intelligence are said to pose a deep risk to society and humans.
Therefore a powerful AI system should be developed only after it is believed to have positive effects and the risks can be controlled or managed.
The letter was issued by the Future of Life Institute, a non-profit organization based in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
