Recep Tayyip Erdogan retained his leadership as President of Turkey after defeating Kemal Kilicdaroglu in the 2023 second round election.

This means that President Erdogan will extend his rule in the country for a third decade.

With 99.43% of votes counted, Turkiye's Supreme Election Council (YSK) announced preliminary results that Erdogan won with 52.14% of the vote, while Kilicdaroglu won 47.86% of the vote.

Speaking in front of thousands of supporters outside the presidential compound in Ankara, Erdogan said victory was not only his but also for all Turkiye people.

Following the decision, the lira fell to a new all-time low against the US dollar at the opening of trading earlier this week.

The election is seen as one of the most important events for Ankara, where the opposition believes it has a strong chance of ousting Erdogan.

Erdogan's popularity has previously suffered due to the rising cost of living crisis following his actions that continued to lower interest rates even as inflation hit 85% last year before easing to 43% in April.
