A review of the current taxation structure and the Basic Contribution of Mercy (Sara) will be the focus of the Dewan Rakyat conference today (Wednesday).

According to the Paper Order on Parliament's official website, Muhammad Ismi Mat Taib (PN-Parit) will ask about the measures taken by the Ministry of Finance to review the current taxation structure taking into account the current economic changes for the question and answer session.

In addition, Zahari Kechik (PN-Jeli) will also ask the Minister of Finance about the number of recipients and funds issued by the government through Sara.

Datuk Shamshulkahar Mohd Deli (BN-Jempol) will ask questions to the Home Minister about the current status of the pilot project for a single border agency (SBA) to oversee the country's 141 entry points and the target date for this new one and when the agency will start operating.

After the session, the conference will continue with the presentation of the Cyber Security Bill 2024 and the Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2024 for the second reading.

Wednesday marks the last day for the First Session of the Third Term of the 15th Parliament which has lasted for 19 days since February 26.

Previously, the Prime Minister of Malaysia said the government would receive an estimated income of RM3 billion as a result of the increase in the Sales and Services Tax (SST).

However, Mohd Shahar Abdullah (BN-Paya Besar) said that the amount of RM3 billion is still considered small when considering the government's expenditure. Service tax was increased to 8 percent effective March 1 compared to the previous rate of 6 percent.

These measures are part of the government's efforts to strengthen the country's financial position while reducing its spending deficit.

Meanwhile, Anwar defended the increase in SST saying it does not affect the price of essential goods and services.
