Lao Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone made his maiden visit to Malaysia and was welcomed by Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim at the Perdana Putra Building on 25 May 2025 (Sunday).
The two leaders met to discuss progress in education, transportation, tourism, investment, defence, agriculture, halal industry and renewable energy.
The discussions also covered the strategic importance of ASEAN as a systematic platform in addressing common issues, in the face of widening geopolitical and geoeconomic challenges.
Total trade between Malaysia and Laos recorded $21.9 million with exports worth $14.9 million and imports amounting to $7.0 million last year.
Malaysia is currently the fifth largest foreign investor in Laos with a total investment of $942 million covering 46 projects focused on the transport, banking, construction and hotel services sectors.
