Pakistan will use 2,000 megawatts (MW) of electricity in the first phase of a national initiative to power AI data centers and Bitcoin mining.
The amount is part of their plan to use their ‘surplus’ electricity in Bitcoin mining and data centers.
However, Pakistan’s power sector is currently struggling with economic challenges including high electricity tariffs and excess generation capacity.
The rapid development of solar energy continues to change the energy landscape as more and more consumers switch to alternative sources to reduce high costs.
According to a statement from the ministry, this initiative is being led by the Pakistan Crypto Council (PCC), a government-backed body, as part of a national strategy to harness surplus electricity, create high-tech job opportunities and attract foreign investment.
He added that the 2,000 MW energy allocation is the first phase of the launch of a multi-tiered digital infrastructure in the country.
