Announcing the tariff on his personal account via Truth Social, Trump described films made outside America as a threat to national security after claiming that foreign countries "steal our filmmakers" through financial incentives, thereby contributing to the collapse of the Hollywood film industry.
Trump stressed that films not produced in the United States should be fully taxed because they are considered foreign propaganda.
He also blamed California Governor Gavin Newsom for the decline in filming activity in Los Angeles, which he said had reduced revenue streams for the state government.
Meanwhile, China has responded by reducing the entry of American films into its country, a major blow to giant studios such as Disney and Warner Bros., which are still struggling post-pandemic.
