Amazon plans to invest $20 billion from 2025 to 2029 to expand and strengthen Australia’s artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure.

The investment is Amazon’s largest technology commitment in Australia, with funds channeled to add new server capacity and support generative AI workloads.

The organization is also investing in three new solar farms in Victoria and Queensland, and has committed to purchasing more than 170 megawatts of combined capacity from the three farms.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said on the X platform that Amazon Web Services’ $20 billion investment in data centers will help the country prepare for the future and spur economic and productive growth.

Major high-end technology firms are ramping up their infrastructure to meet the surge in demand for generative AI and public computing.

Amazon, Google and Microsoft have all increased data center investments to gain market share and meet AI workloads.

In early June, the company announced major investments in North Carolina and Taiwan involving more than $15 billion in public infrastructure.
