The giant Amazon expects artificial intelligence (AI) software to reduce the number of employees at the e-commerce company.
Amazon Chief Executive Andy Jassy said the company will need fewer workers for some existing tasks, and more to perform new ones.
Andy also said that it is difficult to predict the development of the workforce, but AI efficiency is expected to reduce office workers in the coming years.
The Wall Street Journal reported that the company does not expect mass layoffs like in 2022 and 2023 in the near future. Instead, vacant positions will not be filled.
Amazon is now focusing on developing “AI agents” that can perform tasks on their own such as writing software, translating languages, summarizing information and automating various tasks.
Amazon has hired about 1.5 million employees worldwide, with about 350,000 of them working in various roles.
