Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto will visit Russia this week to strengthen bilateral relations with President Vladimir Putin.

Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya said Prabowo is scheduled to meet Putin in Moscow on June 19 and will deliver a special speech the next day at the St Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF).

Indra Wijaya said the visit to the country has strategic importance in efforts to enhance comprehensive cooperation between Indonesia and Russia.

He also said the visit at Putin's invitation was made at a time of heightened global tensions, demonstrating Indonesia's active role in international diplomacy.

Last week, Indonesian Foreign Ministry spokesman Rolliansyah Soemirat confirmed that Prabowo would not attend the G7 Summit in Canada because he had made an earlier commitment to visit Russia.

Prabowo is currently in Singapore to attend the annual Indonesia-Singapore Leaders' Retreat, where he met with President Tharman Shanmugaratnam and Prime Minister Lawrence Wong.
