The Egyptian government is seeking to broker a two-month ceasefire in Gaza, conditional on the release of some Israeli prisoners and the immediate delivery of medical and humanitarian aid.
Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty said his party is working to achieve a long-term solution and a comprehensive ceasefire.
He said this in an interview broadcast on local television channel OnTV.
Abdelatty said the proposal was a joint effort by Egypt, the United States (US) and Qatar and was described as an initial step towards a permanent ceasefire.
Abdelatty stressed that the proposal involves a 60-day ceasefire in exchange for the release of Israeli prisoners and the immediate delivery of aid to Gaza.
The effort is expected to pave the way for the implementation of the agreement on January 19, thus creating momentum towards a lasting solution to the Gaza conflict.
