Billionaire Elon Musk slammed President Donald Trump's tax bill as a "disgusting abomination" on social media platforms yesterday.
Musk also took to social media to slam Trump's supporters in Congress for supporting what he said would increase the federal deficit.
Musk's comments were backed by several Republican senators who he said could make it difficult to pass the bill.
Republican Senate Majority Leader John Thune said he disagreed with Musk's views and insisted he would continue to implement his promised agenda before July 4.
The House passed the bill last month, despite it being expected to add $3.8 trillion to the national debt, and plans to pass it next month with some amendments.
Now that he has stepped down from his official government role, Musk has begun to oppose Trump's proposed legislation, despite previously spending $300 million to support Trump and the Republican party.
Musk has now pledged to cut back on political spending and return to his primary role as Tesla CEO.
Additionally, Senate Republicans are now divided, with one side wanting deeper spending cuts, while the other wants to protect the Medicaid program for low-income people.
Republican senators have also proposed a delay in Trump's tax cuts and are seeking other savings, including delaying Trump's proposed tax cuts for tips, overtime pay and Social Security benefits.
