Maybank has underwritten RM2.5 billion, one-third of the largest Islamic financing for a green data centre by Data Centers (DayOne) in the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ).

DayOne, a Singaporean company, is a regional digital infrastructure leader expanding into key Asian markets such as Johor (Malaysia), Singapore, Bangkok, Tokyo, Hong Kong and Batam (Indonesia).

Maybank said a domestic ringgit Islamic tranche of RM7.5 billion would be matched with an offshore conventional tranche in US dollars, forming a five-year dual-currency green financing package worth RM15 billion.

The banking group said DayOne’s subsidiary WG Data Hub Sdn Bhd would use the proceeds to develop a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)-rated data centre.

LEED is an internationally recognised and widely used green building certification system.

Maybank Group Chief Executive Officer Datuk Khairussaleh Ramli said the transaction reflects the bank's biggest commitment to Islamic financing for data centres and its efforts to advance Islamic and green financing.

DayOne's main data centre campus will be built in the Nusajaya and Kempas Technology Parks in the JS-SEZ and is expected to accommodate the majority of its planned capacity in ASEAN and Japan.
