Here is a brief list of goods and services that will be subject to SST. Read it carefully so you won’t be surprised when you see your receipt tomorrow!
SALES TAX (Sales good tax): 5% – 10%Imposed on the sale of certain goods, including luxury/imported goods.
5% rate
All imported fruits except apples, oranges, dates
All cooking oils except palm oil-based
Luxury imported foods such as salmon, king crab, lobster
Luxury fabrics such as silk, special linen
Essential oils & certain cosmetic products
Certain imported cars (depending on model and classification)
10% rate
Luxury watches
Premium cameras & lenses
High-end jewellery
Antique artwork
Exclusive racing bikes
Caviar, shark fins
No Sales Tax:
Basic local food such as rice, flour, sugar
Imported and local rice
Books, basic educational materials
Basic medicines & health equipment
Basic construction materials such as cement, bricks, pipes
SERVICE TAX: 6% – 8%
Imposed depending on the type of service used
6% rate
Construction services subject to the type & scope of the project
Building maintenance & renovation services
Hotel & accommodation
Food services & beverages
Delivery services
Rate 8%
Kindergartens & private schools with fees exceeding RM60,000 per year/student
Financial & Banking Services (fee-based services) except current accounts, savings accounts, and similar accounts including digital wallets (e-wallets) will not be taxed.
Leasing & Rental Services involves leasing equipment, machinery, commercial buildings
Company Tax
All companies with a business value of more than RM1 million are required to register for the implementation of SST
Transition period without penalty until 31 December 2025
