Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu shared the good news when the government managed to save RM45 million a month following the implementation of egg subsidy cuts that took effect on May 1.

He also announced that the complete termination of egg subsidies scheduled to begin on August 1 is expected to lead to total savings of up to RM135 million within three months.

According to him, the savings will enable the government to re-channel the funds to programs that directly benefit the people.

The statement was made when he was answering a question from Sheikh Puzi Sheikh Ali (BN-Pekan) in the Dewan Rakyat today regarding the impact of subsidy cuts on the egg market and the cost of living.

Mat Sabu, in an optimistic tone, explained that the supply of eggs in the market currently remains stable and prices are still under control.

In fact, for July alone, egg production is projected to reach 1.75 billion eggs, compared to domestic needs of around 1.06 billion eggs. The surplus supply of 690 million eggs, he said, will give the country room to export some of it.

To ensure that the supply and price of eggs remain stable, Mat Sabu assured that his ministry would work closely with the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living to continue to monitor market developments from time to time.

However, with millions of eggs said to be sufficient, and hundreds of millions of ringgit supposedly saved, the people are now waiting for a more important answer, when will the price of kitchenware really go down?
