After four years at the top, tech giant Huawei has returned to the top of the Chinese smartphone market, surpassing local and international rivals such as Apple and Xiaomi.

According to a report by the International Data Corporation (IDC), Huawei managed to grab an 18.1% market share in the second quarter of 2025, with shipments of 12.5 million units.

The success is another point of the company's revival amid widespread challenges starting with the United States (US) export restrictions, Western bans and a corruption investigation in Belgium.

In contrast, Apple recorded a drop to fifth place, controlling only 13.9% of the market with shipments of 9.6 million units as the American company continued to struggle with declining iPhone sales in China.

The Chinese smartphone market as a whole recorded a decline of 4% year-on-year, with shipments of only 69 million units, ending six consecutive quarters of growth.

According to IDC senior analyst Arthur Guo, despite a trade truce between the US and China, consumer confidence remains shaky, making the outlook for smartphone demand remain bleak in the near future.
