The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) launched Ops Kesan 4, a special operation to monitor and crack down on profiteering activities following the expansion of the scope of the Sales and Services Tax (SST).

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said the move was to ensure that no traders took advantage of unreasonable price increases to the point of burdening consumers.

At his ministry's weekly press conference, Wednesday, Fahmi explained that the implementation of this operation was to control any unreasonable price increases and protect consumer rights.

In this regard, he urged the public to save the KPDN hotline number and immediately file a complaint if they detect any price increases so that immediate action can be taken against any party found to be violating the regulations.

In a related development, Fahmi also announced that a total of 23.6 million consumers are expected to enjoy a reduction in electricity bills after the new tariff rates came into effect yesterday.

According to him, the basic tariff introduced is 19% lower than previously projected, and consumers who use less than 1,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per month are expected to receive unchanged or lower electricity bills.

Among the significant changes in the new tariff structure is the adjustment of peak hours, which are now set between 2pm and 10pm.
