Malaysia is determined to uphold justice in Gaza and West Asian countries including Iran, even though this action risks causing the country to be imposed high retaliatory tariffs by the United States (US).
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim described the US action to impose tariffs due to the country's lack of voice in condemning the genocide in Gaza as unfair.
Anwar stated that Malaysia still has until August to resolve the tariff issue amicably, emphasizing that negotiations are still ongoing and that Malaysia's tariff rate is currently lower than Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam.
He also stressed that Malaysia's foreign policy is based on the principles of sovereignty, justice and international law and will not be influenced by any economic threats.
The statement was recorded during the Prime Minister's Question Time session at the Dewan Rakyat, today.
So far, the US is planning to impose a 25% tariff on all Malaysian products exported there from August 1.
