The government is currently examining the implementation of nuclear energy in phases as part of the country's energy transition plan, with the goal of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050.
Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said that nuclear energy has been identified as a clean and stable energy source that can meet the growing demand for electricity, thus supporting efforts to transition from the use of fossil fuels.
According to him, the government is currently carrying out a comprehensive assessment of the country's level of preparedness, covering policy, technical, institutional, legal, safety, human resource development, economic and public awareness aspects.
As an initial step, MyPower has been appointed as the Nuclear Energy Program Implementing Agency (NEPIO) in accordance with the recommendation of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), to coordinate the development of the country's nuclear energy program.
Among the initiatives being implemented include policy formulation, strengthening the legal framework, implementation of technical and feasibility studies, as well as development of institutional capacity and local skilled resources.
The government is also strengthening bilateral and multilateral cooperation with countries and international institutions in the areas of technology, training and compliance with global safety standards.
Although nuclear energy was not included in the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) launched in 2023, the government now recognizes the technology as one of the main options to support energy security, reduce carbon emissions.
