As ASEAN chairman, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim stressed that peace is the only option for Thailand and Cambodia.

He has sent a message to both PMs and wants to urgently discuss the development of the war conflict and hopes that it will stop immediately.

Thailand and Cambodia exchanged heavy artillery fire on Friday, further exacerbating the decade-long conflict despite calls from regional and international countries for an immediate ceasefire.

At least 16 lives have been lost, while tensions on the border continue to rise.

The Thai military reported that the fighting began as early as before dawn in the provinces of Ubon Ratchathani and Surin, claiming that the Cambodian side used heavy artillery and Russian-made BM-21 rocket systems.

According to an official Thai military statement, Cambodia has carried out continuous bombardment using field artillery and rocket launcher systems.

The fighting on Thursday escalated when Thailand launched air strikes on Cambodian military bases using F-16 fighter jets, while Cambodia responded by attacking civilian areas in Thai territory.

Meanwhile, authorities also announced that more than 100,000 residents had been evacuated from the border area as a security measure.

The incident came after months of a stalemate in the border area, which also triggered internal political tensions that brought Thailand's ruling coalition to the brink of disintegration.

The conflict was sparked when a map drawn in a Franco-Siamese treaty in the early 20th century that defined the border between Thailand and Cambodia sparked different interpretations on both sides.
