President Donald Trump said Friday he had a good meeting with Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell and got the impression that Powell may be ready to cut interest rates.
“We had a very good meeting… I think our meeting on interest rates went very well,” Trump told reporters.
The meeting followed a rare visit by a president to the U.S. central bank on Thursday, which saw Trump spar with Powell and criticize the cost of renovating two historic buildings at the bank’s headquarters.
Trump, who earlier this week called Powell “foolish” for refusing to meet the White House’s demands for a big cut in borrowing costs, said he had no intention of firing Powell, despite previously hinting that such action might be taken.
