The administration of US President Donald Trump has sued California after claiming the state's regulations have caused egg prices to rise nationwide.
According to the US Department of Justice, California was found to have violated the Egg Products Inspection Act of 1970, which was intended to curb animal cruelty and prevent foodborne illness.
The lawsuit also states that California's excessive bureaucracy in egg production has led to higher egg prices.
The lawsuit also explains that only the federal government has full authority to regulate egg quality, inspection, and packaging.
California has passed several laws related to egg production and poultry farming, including initiatives in 2008 and 2018 that required chickens to be kept in cages.
