US President Donald Trump threatened an additional 10% tariff on countries that adopt ‘Anti-American’ BRICS policies.
The announcement was made via the Truth Social platform on Sunday, during the BRICS summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Although Trump did not elaborate on the BRICS-related policies, the bloc’s leaders were seen targeting Trump’s aggressive tariff approach in their joint statement.
They expressed concern over unilateral tariff increases and trade policies that are not in line with WTO rules, warning that such measures could disrupt the global economy and widen economic inequality.
The bloc also rejected any unilateral trade protectionist measures, including tariff retaliation that is considered unjustified.
Most recently, the heat of conflict in the Middle East has revived BRICS support for Iran by condemning a series of military attacks on the country, although it did not mention whether it was from Israel or the United States.
The BRICS bloc now includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, UAE, Ethiopia, Indonesia and Iran, making it one of the largest and most diverse coalitions of developing countries.
