Malaysia remains committed to strengthening economic, trade and investment ties with BRICS countries, especially in harnessing the huge potential of artificial intelligence (AI) technology for inclusive development.

MITI Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz said ASEAN's digital economy is expected to reach $2 trillion by 2030 and Malaysia cannot be left behind in seizing this opportunity.

He said the meeting with BRICS trading partners and leaders opened up a great opportunity for Malaysian companies to explore new markets in future-oriented sectors.

MITI will also continue to support local companies to boldly take steps forward and penetrate foreign markets.

He also stressed Malaysia's commitment to strengthening a rules-based and inclusive global trading system.

Tengku Zafrul was part of the Malaysian delegation led by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to the 17th BRICS Leaders' Summit hosted by Brazil.

Previously, President Donald Trump hinted at imposing higher tariffs on BRICS countries as part of an 'America First' economic approach that emphasizes protecting local industries.
