US House Passes 3 Crypto Laws, But Should CBDCs Be Banned?

Republican leaders in the House of Representatives have finally reached a consensus to pass three crypto-related bills (bills) after being stalled for more than nine hours due to a deadlock in the voting process.

The deadlock was caused by a handful of Republicans refusing to support the bills unless there was a clear guarantee that the ban on central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) would be implemented.

The vote was held to open formal debate on the three bills, which was the longest in the history of the House at more than nine hours.

In the end, the official result was 217 in favor and 212 against.

The main push by some members to reject it was because they wanted to stipulate a ban on CBDCs from being included in crypto laws.

House Majority Leader Steve Scalise announced that the ban would be included in the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), a major defense spending bill.

Among the bills are the CLARITY Act, which aims to regulate the structure of crypto markets, the Anti-CBDC Oversight Act, which bans the use of central bank digital currencies (CBDCs), and the GENIUS Act, which introduces a regulatory framework for stablecoins.

President Donald Trump has reportedly expressed his intention to sign all three acts before the weekend, in line with his outspoken pro-crypto approach during the election.
