US chipmaker AMD has expanded its operations in Malaysia by opening a new office and engineering lab in Bayan Lepas, Penang.

According to AMD, Invest-in-Penang Bhd (InvestPenang) and the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (Mida), the 209,000 sq ft facility at GBS by the Sea is designed to support over 1,200 employees with open workspaces and state-of-the-art engineering labs.

InvestPenang is the state-level investment agency, while Mida acts as the national investment agency.

AMD Senior Vice President Keivan Keshvari said the new facility will strengthen the development of next-generation high-performance and artificial intelligence (AI) solutions and strengthen Malaysia’s role as a technology innovation hub.

He also said that with the rapid global shift towards frontier technologies such as AI, the Penang government through InvestPenang will remain committed to supporting progressive investors like AMD.

Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow also stressed that AMD’s five-decade presence in the state further cements Penang’s position as a sustainable and fast-growing investment destination.

During the ASEAN AI Malaysia Summit 2025, AMD launched the Developer Cloud in Malaysia by offering 100,000 hours of free public graphics processing unit (GPU) computing to support AI research and local talent development.
