Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot has warned that his government will face a 'major crisis' if it fails to take a firm stand against Israel and does not recognize the state of Palestine.

Prevot said he may block important government decisions if the issue is not resolved immediately.

Prevot's Les Engages party, along with the ruling CD&V and Vooruit parties, are pushing for a firm stance against Israel and recognition of Palestine.

However, the Flemish nationalist N-VA party and the liberal MR party are opposed to the proposal.

Prevot also accused MR Chairman George-Louis Bouchez of threatening Belgium's credibility by blocking the initiative.

He also stressed that the Gaza issue remains important and will present a memorandum of proposals at a meeting with Prime Minister Bart De Wever and deputy prime ministers next Wednesday.

The proposals include recognition of Palestine, a ban on Israeli Ministers Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich entering Belgium, restrictions on imports from Israel and a ban on the use of airspace and the transit of weapons to Israel.
