Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva is determined to defend his country's economic interests through the World Trade Organization (WTO) following the new United States (US) tariffs on imports from Brazil.
Lula said the Brazilian government has begun strengthening international trade and supporting local companies from the beginning, even before the new US administration took office.
Lula also stressed that he would not contact President Donald Trump because Trump is considered not interested in discussing the tariff issue.
He is also ready to negotiate with Washington, but stressed that the negotiations must be based on a policy of equality and mutual respect and emphasize Brazil's sovereignty.
However, he plans to contact Trump to invite him to attend the COP30 Climate Summit to be held this November in Belem, Para.
The US is expected to impose a 50% tariff on imported goods from Brazil starting this Friday.
