US President Donald Trump is scheduled to attend the Asean Summit to be held in October, according to an announcement by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Anwar said that the matter was conveyed by Trump himself during a phone call between them during tariff negotiations.
The news was conveyed during the tabling of the 13th Malaysia Plan at the Dewan Rakyat.
The report was further confirmed by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio who hinted that Trump would attend the Asean summit in October.
Earlier this month, the United States imposed a 25% tariff on Malaysia which came into effect on August 1. President Donald Trump described the rate as being worth what needs to be eliminated in the trade deficit between the US and Malaysia.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said that several series of discussions had been held between the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry with the US trade representative and the country's Trade Secretary in an effort to address the tariff issue.
As a result, the US officially lowered tariffs on Malaysia to 19% in return for the latest negotiations.
