The Transport Ministry on Wednesday confirmed that RM15 million a year has been spent on the maintenance of the Automated Safety Awareness System (Awas) nationwide.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook said the amount includes the cost of servicing and maintaining the cameras, the behind-the-scenes management system, as well as the cost of printing Awas summonses.

In January, Infomina Bhd was reported to have secured a three-year contract worth RM22.35 million from the Road Transport Department (JPJ) for the maintenance and support of the system, including data centre infrastructure, disaster recovery systems and communication networks.

According to Loke, a study by the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS) showed that the installation of Awas cameras increased driver compliance with road rules by up to 99% in selected locations.

This was explained when he was responding to a question from Hulu Selangor Member of Parliament Hasnizan Harun who asked for an explanation of the total cost of implementing and maintaining the system since it replaced the Automated Enforcement System (AES) in 2017.
