Lisa Cook Refuses to Resign, Trump Allegations Spark Pressure on Fed

Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook insisted on Wednesday that she would not bow to pressure to resign over questions raised on social media.

The statement came after Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) Director Bill Pulte, who is also a Trump administration official, accused Cook of being involved in mortgage fraud and called for her to resign or be fired.

Trump also posted a statement on social media urging Cook to resign, after receiving a letter from Pulte and asking the Justice Department to open a criminal investigation into her.

Cook, however, denied the allegations and insisted that she would not resign.

Pulte's letter to Attorney General Pam Bondi is the latest example of the Trump administration targeting opponents with allegations of mortgage-related misconduct.

The situation also reflects Trump's pressure on the Fed to lower interest rates, after the previous campaign focused much of its attention on Chairman Jerome Powell.

Cook, who was nominated by former President Joe Biden in 2022, recently voted to keep interest rates unchanged at last month's Federal Open Market Committee meeting.
