OpenAI on Tuesday launched a new subscription plan in India priced at 399 rupees ($4.57) per month.
The plan, called ChatGPT Go, is the most affordable offering from the ChatGPT developer as it seeks to strengthen its position in the world's second-largest consumer market.
According to OpenAI, ChatGPT Go provides access to the latest GPT-5 model at a lower cost while offering additional features.
Nick Turley, the head of ChatGPT, explained in a social media post that this plan provides 10 times the message limit, access to image generation and file uploads, and double the memory compared to the free plan.
In his tweet, he wanted to make ChatGPT more affordable, which has been a major request from users. They will launch Go in India first and take feedback before expanding it globally.
OpenAI currently offers two other paid plans: ChatGPT Plus for $20 per month and ChatGPT Pro for $200 globally.
In February, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman met with India’s IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw to discuss plans to create a low-cost AI ecosystem in the country. Altman also praised India’s rapid adoption of AI and described the country as an important market for OpenAI.
The company’s latest AI model, GPT-5, was launched earlier this month to mixed reviews. Some critics said it was less intuitive, prompting OpenAI to restore access to the GPT-4 model for paying customers.
