Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) has received RM2 million from the Global Wildlife Programme (GWP) Malaysia in conjunction with World Orangutan Day 2025 to strengthen conservation efforts for the mammals.
Sarawak Deputy Minister of Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment, Len Talif Salleh said the funds will be used for border control, habitat protection and the implementation of inclusive conservation strategies with communities.
Len Talif also stressed Sarawak’s long-term commitment to protecting Bornean orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus) and preserving the state’s biodiversity treasures.
He also said the allocation will be used to improve various facilities and enhance visitor safety in collaboration with the state and federal governments.
Sarawak is targeting more than a million hectares of land to be gazetted as Fully Protected Areas (TPAs) with 234,335 hectares already allocated for orangutan conservation – almost a quarter of the target.
Among the main areas include Lanjak Entimau Wildlife Sanctuary & Extension, Batang Ai National Park, Sedilu National Park, Ulu Sebuyau National Park and Gunung Lesong National Park.
