Sony has announced that the price of its PlayStation 5 video game console in the United States (US) will be increased by $50 due to ‘challenging economic conditions.’
Tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump have raised the cost of imported goods and forced companies like Sony Japan to decide whether to pass them on to consumers.
Sony Interactive Entertainment Vice President of Marketing Isabelle Tomatis said the company is raising the suggested retail price for the PlayStation 5 in the US due to the challenging economic environment.
Tomatis also said the new price of the PS5 is $550, while the ‘Digital Edition’ is offered at $500 and the Pro version costs $750.
In May, Sony warned that tariffs could cause its cost to reach $680 in the US fiscal year.
Japan has now successfully negotiated a 15% tariff after facing the threat of a 25% tariff increase by the Trump administration.
