U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is confident the Supreme Court will uphold Trump’s use of a 1977 emergency law to impose global tariffs, despite a recent federal appeals court ruling that the action exceeded the president’s authority. The tariffs, however, remain in effect while the case is appealed.

Trump defended the tariffs on Truth Social, insisting they are all legal, and calling the court partisan. He vowed to rely on the Supreme Court to uphold his tariff policies, which he sees as vital to the domestic economy.

At the same time, Trump attacked the U.S.-India trade relationship, claiming it is one-sided because India sells a lot to the U.S. but buys little from the U.S. The remarks come as India strengthens ties with China and Russia, increasing tensions with Washington.

International reactions have also been mounting. Brazilian President Lula has authorized a response to Trump’s 50% tariffs while opening the door to negotiations. Meanwhile, Mexico plans higher tariffs on Chinese goods in its 2026 budget to protect local industries from the flow of cheap Chinese goods under U.S. pressure.
