China Expresses Support for Palestine to Join BRICS

China officially expressed support for Palestine's participation in BRICS in late September 2025, just days after the Palestinian Authority submitted its formal application to join the bloc.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said BRICS is always open to new partners and welcomes Palestine's involvement in dialogue mechanisms towards a more just global system.

Palestine's application was sent through Ambassador Abdel Hafiz Nofal in Moscow to all BRICS members, including the five new countries that joined in January 2024, namely Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, the UAE and Saudi Arabia.

BRICS now covers almost half of the world's population and controls over 40% of global oil production, making it an alternative power to the Western bloc.

China suggested that Palestine start as an observer or invited state before becoming a full member. In Ramallah, this move was considered an important strategy to strengthen Palestine's position in international forums and South-South cooperation.

The support comes as the Palestinian-Israeli conflict escalates, thus giving Palestine a new channel beyond the UN, where Western veto power is often an obstacle.

Analysts see Beijing's move as a strategy to challenge Western dominance, as well as strengthen its influence in the Global South with the support of Arab and Islamic countries.

The final decision now depends on consensus from other BRICS members including Brazil, India, South Africa and Russia. If accepted, it could change the Palestinian diplomatic landscape in the long term.
